As we have been developing audio products over the last 28 years, we have taken note of the challenges that we have encountered and that our users have encountered, and have done our best to come up with cogent, coherent and correct solutions to these challenges. Rather than take each solution and put it into its own product, we have worked hard to integrate capabilities and work-flow solutions into our core product so that when you encounter a new challenge, the likelihood is that the solution is already built in.
We did the heavy lifting so that you don’t have to.
The mkIV converters, preamps and 3d processing are special. They sound beautiful and real, and most of our users feel like they uniquely provide the classic analog experience with all the benefits of digital control and recall.
While there are other great interfaces, great converters, great preamps, great processors, and great monitor controllers, there is nothing else on the market that is great at everything at the same time - all the time.
mkIV is best-in-class in all the classes.
3d, EdgeCard and MHLink (built into every mkIV and 3d unit) are unique in that they provide a modular expansion path that allows your system to grow to meet your needs over time, without ever having to throw anything away.
MHLink’s unmatched ability to merge multiple units into one virtual box with shared resources, shared mixing busses and a shared routing model means that as you require more channels, DSP or interfacing you can simply connect another box to expand your system, without any explicit and complicated routing and configuration. Simply click to connect.
The EdgeCard slot included in every 3d unit allows you to expand the digital interfacing to meet your current needs.
For example, if a you have a number of utility ADAT converter channels available, one of the ADAT cards provides seamless connectivity. On the other hand, if you are working with a large format console with MADI I/O, you can simply pop in a MADI EdgeCard for huge channel count connectivity.
The best part? As your needs change job to job, the system is ready to adapt instantly.
The ability to route anything to anything is baked into MIOConsole3d. Unlike other network-based solutions where each box is an island with digital snakes connecting from one box to another, with MHLink the 3d system routes through the network and the boxes transparently. So you deal with audio, not networking.
Providing future proof digital/computer audio products is a core value of Metric Halo. We build things to last and we maintain them over the long haul. Every hardware product we have ever built over the past 24 years is upgradable to current specs.
This is in direct contrast with every other manufacturer in the industry. While there are a few of our competitors who do an admirable job of maintaining their products over time, we are unique in that we have always had a future-proof plan (and path) for every hardware product we have ever made.
This translates to real value and cost savings over time for you. You don't wind up having to trash your current system every few years just to be able to keep up with the computer industry.
This also means our products hold their value over time, so even if you do decide to make a replacement (like moving from a 2882 to a ULN-8), your existing products can actually be resold for a reasonable fraction of their original cost.
Metric Halo interfaces are unique in that, via SCP, 3d allows more than one host device to stream audio to and from the device at the same time. Coupled with MHLink and multiple units, you can connect one additional computer and mobile device with each unit you add. This allows for unprecedented collaboration and unique workflows that are simply impossible with other interfaces. Patching in virtual instruments running on iPad or multiple simultaneous DAWs is both easy and seamless.
In a very real sense, Metric Halo 3d systems are mixing consoles. MIOConsole3d provides a zero-latency, deep, flexible and intuitive multi-bus, multichannel, multibox live mixing, monitoring and tracking console in hardware. Even better, it fully supports flexible near-zero-latency insert processing (both in the box and out of it).
While MIOConsole3d provides a powerful virtual mixing control surface, it also has deep control surface support, so you can mix with physical faders if you prefer, or even remotely on tablet. MHLink makes it so that the boxes that comprise the system can be placed remotely, so it also functions as a stagebox and digital snake.
Basically, on a mixing, routing and processing level, 3d must be compared with dedicated DSP mixers… not with other audio interfaces. But of course, because it is Metric Halo, it also sounds better :-).
Metric Halo has been in the signal processing game for over 25 years and makes some of the best signal processing plugins in the industry. That experience and knowhow translates to all of the signal processing included in the hardware.
And unlike our competitors who charge licensing fees to use their signal processors on the hardware you have already purchased, every one of our signal processing plugins is included for use on the hardware for free.
The bundle of processors included with the hardware has an MSRP of $1495 (and even better, the hardware includes processors that are not available for purchase separately). Right now the production plugins running on the hardware include:
In addition to the Metric Halo Production Bundle, you get hardware access to the streamlined processing plugins we developed with Make Believe and the world’s only authorized model of the legendary Sontec MES-432D9 mastering equalizer.
The hardware also provides exclusive access to the SonicEQ and MHSuperGate. We developed SonicEQ with Sonic Studio and it utilizes the low-noise high-precision state-space multi-band EQ engine originally developed by Andy Moorer - but with a responsive UI and more bands. SuperGate is a full-featured noise gate/ducker with Metric Halo’s exclusive state-machine driven gain curve architecture.
The MH +DSP graph environment expands the possibilities and palette of processing available, giving you the ability to implement custom processors to suit your own needs in a deep and yet straight-forward latency compensated node and connection environment.
3d integrates a fully featured monitor controller that is available on any 3d-based system.
If the system includes ULN-8/LIO-8 mk3 or mkIV, the monitor controller also supplies fully analog domain level control (post converter) if you utilize the analog channels for output on one of those box types. If you use the analog domain outputs on mkIV units, the outputs are equipped with hardware relay-based monitor mutes to ensure click-free operation when the hardware is power cycled.
If you choose to connect digitally, you still have full monitor control but gain is applied in the digital domain. When connecting digitally, the 3d Monitor controller cannot provide power-cycle mute support and any such muting will be dependent on the converter or system you connect to.
The 3d was the first interface to include ATMOS monitor control support, and the monitor controller currently supports up to 9.2.6 ATMOS utilizing two units (or digital outputs for some of the channels with one unit).
In addition to the basic monitor control functionality (input path and output path switching, gain, channel delay, channel offset, mute, dim and speaker mute and solo), the 3d Monitor controller integrates the full MH +DSP Graph environment into every output path, allowing the user to automatically instantiate DSP processing into their monitoring path, independent of the mixer or computer routing. The Monitor controller also includes a complete Cue system for managing monitoring mixes or aux outputs, with support for talkback and listenback, and independent source and output control, gain, dim, mute and +DSP processing for each Cue.
Nothing else on the market comes close.
MIOConsole3d implements a full featured direct-to-disk multichannel live recording system layered on top of our Session window.
This provides support for anything from single channel to huge 100+ channel multitrack recordings.
It has both overdub and take-based recording modes, can support LTC/SMPTE time-stamping of recorded files, detailed metadata for NLE ingestion, pre-record functionality as well as triggered record functionality.
It also has support for full playback of recorded multitracks through the hardware mixer and to direct outs, so it may be used for virtual soundcheck.
The recorder supports analog, digital and virtual channels.
This means you can record any combination of MIO analog channels, digital inputs and mix busses. The first class support for all inputs means that you can use a digital console for headamp and conversion and feed the inputs to the MIO via AES, ADAT or MADI as record channel sources.
The virtual channel support means that you can record a live mix simultaneously with the discrete channels (without the need for an external console).
In live situations the combination of multichannel recording with direct-out channelized playback means you can feed the previous night's recording back to your console and do virtual soundcheck.
